Degree for Sri Lankan Nurses- Post Basic Nursing School

Sri Lanka Nurses will be able to obtain university degrees through the Post Basic Nursing School in Colombo soon.

Sri Lanka Health Ministry says the government has decided to uplift a major nursing school, the Post Basic School of Nursing (PBSN) as a degree awarding university for nursing. The Colombo Post Basic School of Nursing will be upgraded as a university campus affiliated to the Colombo University.

Nurses who enter this new faculty can follow degrees equivalent to state university degrees. The Post Basic Nursing School will follow the same university entrance procedure as that of other universities when offering admission to nurses.

A special committee has been set up with the representation of the University Grant Commission (UGC), the Higher Education Ministry and Health Ministry to formulate the syllabus, look into outstanding matters and with regard to other procedures. The degree course will be four years in duration.

Post Basic School of Nursing which was started in 1960 is the only institution for higher nursing education in Sri Lanka. It provides the Diploma in Teaching and Supervision for Nursing Tutors and Diploma in Ward Management and Supervision for Ward Sisters.
In addition, it conducts other short-term courses for registered nurses including courses on orthopedic nursing, intensive care nursing, operation theatre and, pediatric nursing.
